Special Two-Fer Discounts

Everyone one is watching their euros and dollars (U.S., Canadian, Singaporean, Australian and otherwise) these days.  That’s why the IAEWS is pleased to announce that it has negotiated a special discount for Members wishing to attend the two premier conferences in our industry this fall:
• the IAEWS Fall Member Congress on October 26th
and
• the ERE Fall Conference & Expo on October 27th and 28th.
Both events will be held in the same venue: The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood, Florida, USA.

Now, you can attend both these events AND save over $600 off the standard registration rates.  Instead of paying $1,740 per person, IAEWS Members will have access to the exclusive two-fer rate of just $1,115.  That one fee enables you to get together with your peers at the IAEWS conference and then get together with your customers at the ERE conference (all while enjoying some quality time on Florida’s famed Gold Coast).  So, don’t wait another minute, sign up now.

The online registration portal is located here: https://www.jobtarget.com/site/1765/register.cfm.  We thank IAEWS Member JobTarget OneClick for developing the online registration functionality.

In addition, ERE has announced the availability of discounted rooms at The Westin Diplomat.  Rooms are being offered at $289 per night, plus tax.  Given the popularity of these two events, the block of discounted rooms is likely to go fast, so make your reservations now.  You can reach the hotel at 888.627.9057.  Identify yourself as an attendee at the ERE 2010 Fall Expo.

The Debate Goes On

The IAEWS is a trade association so, by definition, it is an organization of competitors.  That is nowhere clearer than in the ongoing debate over the expansion of the dot.jobs top level domain (TLD).  Following are two communications from Members on this issue.  The first is from Bill Warren, CEO of DirectEmployers Association, who supports the expansion.  His comments are in response to statements made in the previous edition of this newsletter.  The second is from John Bell, the CEO of Boxwood.  He is the chair of a task force of organizations opposed to the expansion.

Bill Warren’s statement:

As you might imagine, I am very disappointed with your description of the .jobs project in this week’s IAEWS newsletter.

Specifically troubling were statements such as, “…and allow it (Employ Media) to flood the market with millions of geocentric and occupation specific sites” and, “…it would create so much clutter in the marketplace that job seekers would likely find it all but impossible to locate their job postings.”

Without debating each point in this email, I would like to suggest that you visit the .jobs informational web site at www.universe.jobs for a complete description and better understanding of our plans to launch the .jobs platform.

In the future we would like to work with IAEWS and other organizations to find ways, within the .jobs charter, to work with all job boards.

Please contact me at your convenience if you have questions or need additional information.

John Bell’s statement:

The ICANN charter with Employ Media specifically states that the TLD is to be used only to “serve the needs of the international human resource management community.”  Unfortunately, SHRM—the sponsor for Employ Media’s charter and the organization responsible for reviewing its expansion request—has chosen to limit the definition of that term to employers only in its review of the issue.

In essence, SHRM is turning its back on the tens of thousands of job boards, associations, staffing firms and recruitment advertising agencies and their employees who are members of SHRM.  These organizations not only support SHRM by advertising in its publications and exhibiting at its conferences, but they are and have always been an integral part of the international human resource management community.

No less important, the proposed expansion will harm employers for several reasons.  First, by flooding the market with tens of thousands of .jobs sites, Employ Media will undermine the recruitment efforts of those employers that purchased a .jobs license in good faith and in accordance with the current ICANN charter.  And second, given that Employ Media would have sole and exclusive control over the pricing of featured postings and other premium services on those dot.jobs sites, the expansion would also make employers susceptible to price gouging.

For all of these reasons, we would respectfully urge SHRM to reject Employ Media’s proposed expansion of its charter.

Nominations for Top 100
