The Dot.Jobs Situation

A message from Peter Weddle, Executive Director of the IAEWS:

Since 1993, the community of online employment service companies—job boards, online advertising aggregators, associations, platform developers, recruitment advertising agencies, newspapers and other publications that develop, own and/or operate job posting and/or resume search databases—has effectively served working men and women and employers worldwide.  These same organizations have also significantly improved the career prospects of veterans, minorities, disadvantaged persons and those affected by natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina.  They have, in every respect, acted as “the Sources of Success,” the trademark of the IAEWS, their industry trade association.

This community is now threatened by a proposed change in the dot.jobs top level domain (TLD).  The charter holder—a company called Employ Media—is attempting to extend the application of the TLD from its approved community—direct employers—into the online employment services community by introducing geocentric (Atlanta.jobs, NewYork.jobs, Athens.jobs) and occupation specific (nurse.jobs, salesperson.jobs, systemsanalyst.jobs) Web-sites.  It now has a proposal to implement this plan before the governing board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers (ICANN).

This proposal violates both the spirit and the letter of the charter holder’s contract with ICANN.  No less important, it will grievously harm our community by confusing the job seekers and employers whom we have long supported and served so well.  For both of these reasons, I strongly urge you to voice your opposition to this move.

A Task Force of IAEWS Members has been formed and is actively working to defend our community.  John Bell, Chairman and CEO of Boxwood, is the Task Force Chair.  Please join this group and support its effort.  TIME IS SHORT AS OUR INPUT TO ICANN MUST BE RECEIVED BY THIS THURSDAY, JULY 15TH.

What should you do?

Contact the Task Force Administrator, Carol Barber, at cbarber7128@gmail.com.  She has all of the details to get you involved.

Invest in Protecting Your Community

The Task Force has also retained a leading attorney to assist with its efforts.  A Partner in the firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP in Washington, D.C., this individual has a long and distinguished record in ICANN matters.

To facilitate the expense of retaining the attorney, the IAEWS Board of Governors is asking the Association’s Members to contribute to an IAEWS Industry Defense Fund.  We are asking each Member to contribute $1000 (USD) or whatever they feel they can afford toward this critically important effort.  The collected monies will be held in a separate escrow account and dispensed only to defray attorney fees and expenses.  Any funds remaining after the conclusion of the matter will be repaid to those organizations that contributed on a pro rata basis.

Over a dozen Members have already contributed, some substantially more than the requested amount and others a bit less.  So please, do what you can and send your check, payable to the IAEWS Task Force Fund, to the following address:
IAEWS
2052 Shippan Avenue
Stamford, Ct 06902

As we are already actively implementing our strategy, please forward your check as soon as possible.

IAEWS Member to Member Directory

One of the most important benefits of membership in the IAEWS is the opportunity to meet and get to know one’s peers in the industry.  To facilitate that interaction, the Association publishes a Member-to-Member Directory.

Historically, this publication has been distributed in print and updated every other year.  In an effort to make the Directory even more useful, we have now published it online—in the Members Only area of the IAEWS Web-site.  In addition, the Directory will now be updated twice each year, in the spring and fall.

It took us awhile to implement these changes, but we are pleased to announce that the latest Member-to-Member Directory is now available.  Please remember that the publication is provided solely for the private use of the Association’s Members.  It should not be transferred, sold, bartered, loaned or in any other way transmitted to an organization that is not an IAEWS Member or to an individual who is not a bona fide representative of an IAEWS Member without the express written permission of the IAEWS.

Finally, if you would like to make a change in your organization’s listing in the Directory, please provide that information to Peter Weddle at director@employmentwebsites.org.  We expect the next updates to be made in mid October, just prior to the Fall Member Congress.

Special Two-Fer Discount

The IAEWS is pleased to announce that it has negotiated a special discount for Members wishing to attend both of the two premier conferences in our industry this fall:
• the IAEWS Fall Member Congress on October 26th
and
• the ERE Fall Conference & Expo on October 27th and 28th.
The events will be held in the same venue: The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood, Florida, USA.

Now, you can attend both of these events AND save over $600 off the standard registration rates.  Instead of paying $1,740 per person, IAEWS Members will have access to the exclusive two-fer rate of just $1,115.  That one fee enables you to get together with your peers at the IAEWS conference and then get together with your customers at the ERE conference (all while enjoying some quality time on Florida’s famed Gold Coast).  So, don’t wait another minute, sign up now.

The online registration portal is located here: https://www.jobtarget.com/site/1765/register.cfm.  We thank IAEWS Member JobTarget OneClick for developing the online registration functionality.

The IAEWS has also been able to negotiate access for its delegates to ERE’s special discounted room rate at The Westin Diplomat.  Rooms are being offered at $289 per night, plus tax.  Given the popularity of these two events, the block of discounted rooms is likely to go fast, so make your reservations now.  You can reach the hotel at 888.627.9057.  Identify yourself as an attendee at the ERE 2010 Fall Expo.

Congress Sponsorships Available

Nominations for Top 100

As many of you know, WEDDLE’s publishes a biannual guide to the online employment industry.  Called the “Zagat of online employment” by the American Staffing Association, it is found in virtually every academic and public library in the U.S. and Canada and sold on Amazon.com and in the world’s leading bookstores.

WEDDLE’s is now preparing for its next edition, which will hit bookstore shelves in early 2011.  This tenth anniversary edition will feature The Top 100, the editors’ pick of the best employment sites on the Internet.  If you would like your site or sites to be considered for this special recognition, please email Peter Weddle for a nomination form.

Each site in The Top 100 is given full page, feature coverage in the Guide and recognized with a special icon that can be displayed online and in print collateral.

Your IAEWS Member Benefits

Your Member Icon Means Something

One of the key benefits you receive as an IAEWS Member is the opportunity to display the Association’s Member icon on your site and in your promotional literature.  Both the media and our customers in HR and among job seekers increasingly recognize the icon and regard it as the “Good Housekeeping seal of approval” when shopping for a job board.  So, make sure your site gets the distinction it deserves.  Post the IAEWS Member icon today.
