The Dot.Jobs Meeting at DirectEmployers
As has been widely reported, the DirectEmployers Association (DEA) recently hosted a meeting at its headquarters in Indianapolis, IN to provide information on its dot.jobs initiative. Executive Director Peter Weddle represented the IAEWS. The following is his report.
DEA is a 501(c)6 nonprofit incorporated in Indiana. It is owned and operated by approximately 500 member companies.
Last year, DEA entered into a contractual agreement with Employ Media, the holder of the dot.jobs (.jobs) domain charter from ICANN. The purpose of this agreement is not to launch “a million job boards” as reported in some media, but rather to “build out a top level domain” for its holder. In essence, DEA is developing a single employment site that will have several thousand or more URLs. The URLs will initially be geocentric (e.g., Indianapolis.jobs) and later expand to those that are occupation specific (e.g., lawyers.jobs).
Employ Media continues to own the URLs, but their content will be provided by DirectEmployers. That content will initially be the jobs posted on the sites of DEA member companies and the state workforce agencies supported by DEA’s JobCentral.org platform. At some point in the future, job postings will also be accepted from non-DEA companies.
DEA will make no money on the postings or on any up-sell for feature positioning on a dot.jobs site. (It’s not yet clear who will be doing the up-selling—the staff of Employ Media or DEA.) DEA’s goal in the initiative is to provide an additional benefit for its members and thus enhance the value proposition of membership in its association.
DEA expects to accomplish that goal by providing its members with a no-cost platform for advertising their job postings that is also a trusted domain for job seekers. They will confirm that the jobs being posted are from actual employers and prohibit advertisers from asking for money from applicants. In addition, all postings will also have to link back to the employer’s own Web-site.
Finally, DEA member companies have agreed to pay commissions on .jobs postings to the recruitment advertising agencies with which they work. DEA officials hope that this collaborative approach with agencies can be replicated with job boards. That said, the new URLs will clearly be competitive with existing job boards. As DEA Executive Director Bill Warren acknowledges, “The goal is not to dominate or control the market, but that could become a reality.”

The Source Code of M&A Activity in our Industry
Cashing Out or Cashing In—The Financial Dynamics of M&A Activity in the Online Employment Services Industry is the first-ever research report on this important topic. Commissioned by the International Association of Employment Web Sites and conducted by Kennedy Information, it looks at everything from valuation formulas to non-compete clauses, from deal breakers to how good will is measured in mergers and acquisitions involving employment Web-sites.
The study surveyed IAEWS Members to collect qualitative data and interviewed principals with venture capital, investment banking and other firms to obtain quantitative data from actual deals. The result is a ground-breaking look at what firms are buying, what firms are selling, and what terms are being negotiated in our industry—one of the most successful in the e-commerce space.
This report is available to Members of the International Association of Employment Web Sites at a special $200 discount. Its cost is $395.00, plus shipping. All orders are shipped by U.S. Priority Mail or Air Mail.
