IAEWS Elects First-Ever Industry Board of Governors

The IAEWS made history when its Members published the first-ever Code of Ethics for the global online employment services industry.  Now, the Members of the Association have done it again.  They’ve made history by electing—for the first time ever—a group of their peers to help the trade association further establish and enhance the growth of our industry.  These individuals will serve as the 2008 IAEWS Board of Governors.

The IAEWS Board of Governors consists of seven individuals nominated and elected by the membership of the Association.  They will work with Executive Director Peter Weddle to ensure that the IAEWS provides its Members with the resources and support that will best contribute to their success at the bottom line and in meeting the needs of job seekers, employers and recruiters alike.

The 2008 IAEWS Board of Governors—our inaugural leadership team—includes:

  • Ethan Bloomfield, JobTarget OneClick
  • John Bell, Boxwood
  • Ted Daywalt, VetJobs
  • Dan Honig, WorkplaceDiversity.com
  • Aaron Matos, Jobing
  • Constance Melrose, Dice
  • Don Ramer, Arbita

Please congratulate these individuals on their election and thank them for their willingness to serve the Association and all of us in the industry.

If you’d like the Association to consider a certain course of action or activity, you now have two ways to get it under review.

The Board will meet with Peter on a quarterly basis to discuss upcoming programs, plans and other topics as appropriate.  You’ll find contact information for all members of the Board of Governors (or the organization they represent) in the Member Directory.

So, What’s Up With the M&A Report?

The Mergers & Acquisition Report being prepared by Kennedy Information has been a challenge but is now on its way to final completion.  It will be shipped on or before February 8th to those who have previously paid for the publication.  Those who have not yet ordered a copy and would like to do so should call Pamela Joyce-Spear at 317.598.9768.

A word about the delay in publication: As most of you will recall, this report will be a ground-breaking look into the financial and other dynamics of buying and selling job boards.  As might be expected when conducting research in a relatively new industry such as ours which has, to date, seen a relatively small number of deals, the facts have been hard to pin down and even harder to verify.  Smoke and mirrors would have been easy; verified empirical data was (and remains) our (far more useful) objective.  That being the case, Kennedy has reached out to and twisted the arms at a number of investment banking, venture capital and other firms and talked to a broad cross section of IAEWS Members.  The end result, we are told, substantially expands on and enriches the content of first draft of the report which was presented at the Member Congress in Orlando in late November.

IAEWS In the News

The IAEWS Code of Ethics was featured in an article by Theresa Minton-Eversole which appeared in the 2008 lead-off issue of Staffing Management from the Society for Human Resource Management.  The very positive review underscored the differentiating commitment that IAEWS Members have made to ethical business practices.

Of course, that distinction only helps if your current and prospective customers know about it.  How can you be sure that they do?  By displaying the IAEWS Member icon on your home page and in your marketing literature.  There’s simply no better way to set yourself apart from the rest of the herd online.

PageRank Search ToolArt Koff of RetiredBrains.com was kind enough to share the following free online tool for those who might not yet be aware of it.

The PageRank Search tool (seochat.com/seo-tools/pagerank-search) allows you to conduct a search of the Web using Google and whatever keywords you select.  The search results it returns will list the Web-sites associated with those keywords and rank order them according to (Google’s assessment of) their relevance.  Ranking is expressed with a graphical bar and corresponding ratio.  (Editor’s Note: Although the tool is supposed to present the search results in rank order, it doesn’t (at least not accurately) so beware of accepting the list order of the search results as an indication of relevance.)

New Member Forum Established

The Working Group on Customer Privacy & Security, chaired by Carl Braun, has held its first meeting and laid out a prioritized plan of action to address a range of topics in this vital area.  It has also launched a new Member Forum called Security & Privacy Issues & Answers.  This is a Member-only, password protected discussion area where you can raise questions, add your own insights and information, and gain from the contributions of your peers.

Clearly, our industry isn’t the only one suffering from hackers, malware attacks, phishing and other malicious activities online, nor are we likely to be able to solve this Web-wide problem all by ourselves.  Nevertheless, we have a critical interest in protecting ourselves as best we can, both individually and collectively.  Why?  Because we are all affected by such attacks as they undermine the trust that is so essential to the relationships we build with both job seekers and employers.  For that reason, please take a moment from time-to-time to participate in the Security & Privacy Issues & Answers forum.  As with the Round Robins at our Member Congresses, if we all give a little, we all will gain a lot.

Free Visibility for Your Press Releases and White Papers

Just a reminder that IAEWS Members can have their press announcements, research reports  and white papers posted on the IAEWS site.

Why bother?  Because the IAEWS site (and its Press page, in particular) is now the first stop for journalists writing about our industry or looking for employment-related topics about which to write.

How does it work?  Simply send your press announcement, white paper summary or extract to Peter Weddle (director@employmentwebsites.org), and he’ll see that it’s posted.  (To aid in administration, please send Word documents only.)

Coming Up Next Month

The Association will be conducting an anonymous survey of its Members to determine key facts and figures about the current state-of-the-art among job boards and other employment-related Web-sites.  What products and services are offered and what features and functionality define the user’s experience online.  The survey results will be made available to all Member organizations that participate.
