IAEWS Adopts First Ever Industry Code of Ethics

The nay-sayers said it couldn’t be done.  The industry critics opined that job boards didn’t have what it takes to set standards for themselves.  Well, they were wrong.  Thanks to the work of chairman Dan Honig, the members of the IAEWS Working Group on the Code of Ethics and others who contributed—notably Don Ramer, Ted Daywalt, Sunny Mokha, Manuel Francisci and Eric Shannon—the IAEWS has adopted the first ever Code of Ethics for the online employment services industry.

Is it perfect?  Nothing is.  Is it a credible start?  Absolutely.  Indeed, the guidelines that we’ve adopted set our Members apart from other, less reputable sites operating in our industry.  They provide a tangible differentiator that will help sell clients and attract talent.  No less important, they represent a commitment to excellence of which we all can be proud.  The text of the code follows.

The IAEWS Code of Ethics

IAEWS Members are leaders in their industry. In acknowledgement of that role, they agree to adhere to the following Code of Ethics:

Confidentiality
We will maintain a privacy policy that is open and transparent. We will adhere to generally accepted principles for the use of information acquired online, to include the full disclosure of what personal information is collected and how it is used and/or released to others.

For example, Members will carefully protect hosted individual passwords and clearly indicate the use of all individual contact information.

Fairness
We will operate with respect for our customers and deliver our products and services as promised.  In addition, we will compete fairly in the marketplace and not slander our competitors.

For example, Members will provide easy-to-find and up-to-date contact information on their sites for both employers and job seekers.

Honesty
We will not engage in deceitful or deceptive business practices. We will deliver our products and services as they are represented in our sales and marketing materials and provide accurate data on their performance and our operations.

For example, Members will make every effort to ensure that all job postings displayed on their sites are genuine employment opportunities.

Responsibility
We will serve the interests of all of our customers—employers, recruiters and job seekers. We will resolve customer issues to the best of our ability.

For example, Members will clearly state how long a resume will be archived on their sites and respect that commitment.

Self Regulation
We acknowledge that compliance with the IAEWS Code of Ethics is a condition of membership in the Association. We will adhere to the Code in all aspects of our business operations and expeditiously remediate any areas of noncompliance.

How Can You Put the Code to Work for You?

The Code is posted at the Association’s Web-site under the Mission tab.  Members are invited to reproduce, link to and/or mention it in their promotional and marketing materials.  In addition, the Association, itself, is beginning an aggressive promotional effort to announce the Code and underscore its importance for both employers and job seekers.  Bottom Line: If we want the Code to set Members apart, we have to make sure our customers know about it and what it means.

News You Can Use

New Association Members

The Association is pleased to welcome the following organizations into its membership:
  • SnagAJob.com
  • Kennedy Information
  • Job.com

Member Directory

Looking for a joint venture partner?  Want to set up a cross-marketing program with another job board?  In the not too distant future, it will be a lot easier to do so.

You will shortly be contacted by an IAEWS staff member to collect and/or verify information for our first Member Directory.  This directory is for Member-use only.  The Association will not sell or otherwise provide it to organizations that are not IAEWS Members.  It is intended solely to facilitate Member-to-Member interaction.

The Directory will include the following information for each Member:
  • Name of parent organization
  • Name of site(s) operated by the organization
  • Site(s) specialization, if any
  • Primary point of contact in the organization (for Members)
  • Point of contact postal address
  • Point of contact e-mail address
  • Point of contact telephone number.

In addition, we will collect a Media point of contact for each site and publish a Media Guide for IAEWS Members.  This booklet will then be widely distributed to business and trade journalists and publications.

Before & After the Member Congresses

As we hope you know by now, we are holding two Member Congresses this year.  One will be held before the OnRec Expo2007 in San Francisco on September 17, and the other will held after the Kennedy Information Recruiting 2007 Conference & Expo in Orlando on November 14.  We hope you’ll attend one and preferably both of our Congresses (they will have different programs) AND attend or exhibit at one or both of our partner conferences.  Information about each follows.

OnRec Expo2007
Onrec.com/Online Recruitment Magazine will be holding the Onrec Expo2007 in San Francisco on September 18-19, 2007.  It will follow the second Annual IAEWS Member Congress-West and be held at the same hotel location.  Last year, we assembled a top-notch forum of speakers, and 2007 promises to be even bigger and better!

"If you wanted a conference that really brought you up to date on the current trends and intelligence about online recruiting, this was the one to be at. I gathered more great information here in one day than I would have in six months of reading white papers and media coverage."  John Hollon, Editor, Workforce Management Magazine

This year, we expect around 450+ attendees!  The event will attract Staffing and HR executives from many corporations with global staffing needs.  Generalist and niche job boards will find an excellent showcase for their services.  For more information, click here.

Looking to exhibit?  Onrec has a number of booths and other sponsorship opportunities still available.  In addition, participating IAEWS Members will receive a complimentary 1/8 ad in our magazine … a $515 value!

If you're interested in greater exposure and sales for your company, contact the OnRec North American rep, Tim Hartrich early to reserve your booth! Tim can be reached at 1-630-985-3006 or tim@onrec.com.

Kennedy Information Recruiting 2007 Conference & Expo

Recruiting professionals from the corporate and healthcare sectors will gather for Kennedy Information's Recruiting 2007 Conference and Expo at The Florida Hotel and Conference Center in Orlando, FL on November 12-14, 2007.  It will precede the second Annual IAEWS Member Congress-East and be held at the same hotel location.

The theme of this year’s Conference and Expo is "Effective Recruiting: Select and Retain the Best”.  It will be the perfect forum to discuss proven strategies and best practices for recruiting and retaining top talent—the newest area of corporate competitiveness.

This is Kennedy's 15th semi-annual conference, and we expect hundreds of attendees looking to address the recruiting issues facing talent management staff and managers today.  Our program tracks will include:
  • Recruiting with a Marketing Mindset
  • The Future of Talent Acquisition (with a panel of IAEWS Members!) and
  • Defining Recruiting Success.

For more information, please contact Kennedy Information at RecruitingConference@kennedyinfo.com.

Member Mini-Meetings

As the Association did last year, we’ve scheduled a number of Member Mini-Meetings with the Association’s Executive Director, Peter Weddle, during his trips around the country.  Several of these meetings have already been held, and we thank those who where able to join us for a little business mixed with a little more conviviality.

A number of additional Mini-Meetings are now on the calendar.  They will be held in the following cities:
  • Minneapolis, MN  May 1, 2007
  • Washington, D.C.  May 4, 2007
  • Las Vegas, NV  May 9, 2007
  • Chicago, IL  May 21, 2007
  • San Diego, CA  June 5, 2007
  • Seattle, WA  June 6, 2007
  • Toronto, Canada  June 13, 2007
  • San Francisco, CA  June 18, 2007

We’d certainly like to see you at any of these events, should your schedule permit.  Just call Peter at 203.964.1888 so he can give you the meeting time and location in your area.

OFCCP Working Group

Under the chairmanship of Hope Gurion and Ted Daywalt, this group continues its work to deal with the fallout from the Internet Applicant Rule issued by the OFCCP.  Currently, it is soliciting topics and issues for a “sit-down” with the Agency.  Among the items already on the agenda are:

Veterans Act Compliance.  With AJB disappearing later this year and employers’ reliance on that site as a Veterans Act compliance vehicle, what are the Agency’s plans, if any, to ease the compliance burden on employers that may otherwise have to phone, mail, fax or e-mail job postings to the relevant local employment agency?

Audit Activity.  We want to probe for any initial findings from audit investigations that haven’t been reported or get a sense of timing for any public announcements.  The Agency posted results from its FY2006 audits and they’re significant.  A record $51.5 million in assessments were recovered from government contractors after a 45% increase in compliance evaluations.  Apparently the Agency has increased its staff by 400% as a result of increased revenues and the focus on pursuing compliance evaluations.

In addition, the Working Group would like to hear from Members on the following questions:

1.  Since the latest FAQ update on the Internet Applicant Rule posted on the Agency site in November, 2006, what do you feel are the top two-three needed clarifications/questions that you’re hearing from your employer customers?

2.  What impacts are you seeing in terms of product/service usage or development requirements as a result of employers’ reaction to the rule?

3.  Are there any other topics you would like to have discussed with the agency at the meeting?

You can reach Hope at Hope.Gurion@careerbuilder.com; you can reach Ted at tdaywalt@vetjobs.com.

Looking for a Catchy Name?

What’s in a name?  Maybe everything.  With all of the clutter in the marketplace these days, a name is often the first and best chance a new product or service has to stand out.

If you’re about to launch an important, new feature for your site and want to give it a name that customers will remember, drop by the Publishing Name Game.  Based on a study of 700 books (half of which were best sellers), it will let you know what is likely to work and what isn’t.

The instrument isn’t perfect (It gave “The DaVinci Code” a modest 36% chance of being a megahit), but it does make use of some interesting research on the impact of names on sales.  For example:
  • Names with figurative or abstract language seem to resonate more with customers than those with literal terms, and
  • Long names aren’t necessarily bad, despite conventional wisdom to the contrary.

We took the model for a test drive and here’s what we found: If you introduced a new service and named it your Recruiting Cost Calculator, it would have just an 8% chance of being a big hit, but if you named the same service Naked Cost Exposer, it has a 26% chance of hitting a homerun with consumers.  No surprise there!
